Disabilities in Nutrition and Dietetics Member Interest Group
Discover Nutrition and Dietetics for People of All Abilities!
Welcome to the exhibit for the Disabilities in Nutrition and Dietetics Member Interest Group (Disabilities MIG), a part of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics—the largest organization of food and nutrition professionals in the world. The Disabilities MIG connects members who:
• Identify as having a disability.
• Work with clients or patients with disabilities.
• Educate or mentor others with disabilities.
• Are interested in how disability relates to nutrition and dietetics.
Meet Suzi Domel Baxter, PhD, RD, LD, FADA, FAND!
Suzi is a registered dietitian with a mobility disability. She co-founded the Disabilities MIG and served as its first Chair. Now as Past Chair, she continues to advocate for greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in dietetics.
Why Visit Our Exhibit?
Dietitians are food experts who help people make healthier eating choices. Yet only 2% of dietetics practitioners have disabilities, compared to 29% of U.S. adults. Suzi and the Disabilities MIG are passionate about increasing representation and accessibility in this field.
Explore Two Exciting Books by Suzi Domel Baxter:
1. For Kids: “When I Grow Up, I Can Be a Dietitian!”
o A beautifully illustrated book featuring 10 diverse children (including kids with disabilities) imagining careers as dietitians in 10 exciting settings (hospitals, research, sports nutrition, community health, food service, the military, nursing homes, education, their own businesses, and the food industry)
o Includes the 10 children’s favorite fresh vegetables paired with kid-friendly dips or toppings.
o Two activity pages spark children’s interest in nutrition and reinforce key points of the book.
o A perfect introduction to dietetics for children, teachers, and families!
2. For Teens and Adults: “Credentialed Dietetics Practitioners with Disabilities Get the Job Done”
o Features inspiring stories from 15 dietetics practitioners with disabilities (e.g., blindness, mobility challenges, chronic illnesses).
o Learn how they navigated college, internships, careers, and accommodations, as well as their unique perspectives on food and disability culture.
o Includes educational chapters about disability resources, statistics, and pathways to becoming a dietitian.
