American Printing House for the Blind

The American Printing House for the Blind (APH), established in 1858, is the world’s foremost provider of accessible educational materials, products, and technologies for people who are blind or visually impaired. Our mission is to empower individuals with vision loss by fostering independence, enhancing quality of life, and expanding educational and career opportunities. We believe that every person, regardless of their visual abilities, deserves access to the tools and resources necessary to achieve success.

At APH, our work is driven by a commitment to inclusion, innovation, and accessibility. We design, produce, and distribute a wide range of products, including tactile educational materials, accessible books, adaptive technologies, and assistive devices. Our product lines cater to students, educators, and individuals of all ages, supporting learning in both academic and daily living settings. From early childhood through adulthood, APH provides resources that assist with literacy, STEM education, vocational skills, and independent living.

Our educational materials include a variety of braille books, tactile graphics, large print materials, and digital formats, allowing access to a diverse and flexible curriculum. We are also at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology solutions, such as the Monarch, a dynamic tactile display, and devices like the MATT Connect and Jupiter, which offer digital magnification and accessibility to people with low vision.

APH also offers a range of support services, professional development opportunities, and collaborative initiatives. We engage with educators, rehabilitation professionals, and families to ensure our products are used effectively to meet the specific needs of users. Our partnerships with federal and state agencies, schools, and rehabilitation centers amplify our reach and impact across the United States and beyond. Through the APH ConnectCenter, we provide online resources and information on vision loss to families, students, and adults, making it easier to navigate available services and support.

We are guided by core values of innovation, collaboration, and advocacy. APH invests in research and development to pioneer new products that address the evolving needs of individuals with vision loss. We collaborate with leading experts, educators, and technology developers to create accessible solutions that empower users. Additionally, we advocate for equal access and inclusion, working closely with national and international organizations to raise awareness about the needs and rights of people with vision loss.

As a nonprofit organization, APH is proud to serve a global community of users and stakeholders. Our work has a transformative impact, enabling individuals to learn, work, and thrive independently. Whether through creating advanced technology or offering support to teachers, parents, and caregivers, APH is dedicated to fostering a future where every individual with visual impairments can reach their full potential.

In summary, APH’s mission is to empower those who are blind or visually impaired by providing accessible educational materials, assistive technologies, and support services that promote independence, learning, and inclusion in all aspects of life.
